ABOUT US
Dr. John McGehee is a periodontist in Charleston, West Virginia. He has been practicing Periodontics for over 15 years and focuses in flap surgery, dental implants, cosmetic/gum surgery, and bone grafting.
Dr. McGehee’s knowledge and expertise allows him to correct a wide variety of periodontal (gum) diseases and conditions. The effects of these types of problems can have a negative impact on your smile and self confidence. Treatment to rectify these problems can be relatively simple and have a significant impact on self esteem. When you feel better about your dental health, it shows in your attitude and appearance.
Tooth loss or missing teeth can also have a negative impact on self esteem. Dental implants are designed to provide a foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel and function like natural teeth. Missing teeth can also have a negative impact on one’s quality of life. Dental implants can restore your ability to eat and smile as well as preserve facial contours. Dental implants enable our patients to preserve or regain the comfort and confidence to eat, speak, laugh and better enjoy life.
Dr. McGehee also offers sedation for patients who are anxious about dental treatment. Sedation is also beneficial for patients who just want to have the least stressful/relaxed experience possible during treatment. He will assess what type of sedation is best for you.
Most of our patients are referred by their general dentist, but we also see patients who call to request an examination. Our office is located at 1311 Quarrier Street near the Capitol in downtown Charleston, WV. MEET OUR STAFF
Dr. John W. McGehee
DMD, MS. Board Certified Periodontist
Dr. John McGehee is originally from Coastal Mississippi. After earning his DMD from the University of Mississippi in 2003, he began a vigorous 3 year residency training program in Periodontics at the University of Louisville. Dr. McGehee then served as an Officer in the US Navy Dental Corps. During his Naval career, he was awarded multiple Achievement/Commendation Medals including Outstanding Clinician for his Battalion. He was also awarded the Outstanding Teaching and Mentoring in Periodontics award while assigned as Staff at the prestigious Naval Postgraduate Dental School in Bethesda, Maryland. Dr. McGehee was promoted to the rank of Commander just prior to resigning his commission in the US Navy in 2015 after 9 years of active duty service.
Upon his transition from the Navy to the private sector, Dr. McGehee moved to Charleston after purchasing the practice. He and his wife Melissa are the proud parents of their daughter Madison. He is an active member in the American Academy of Periodontology, American Dental Association, Kanawha Valley Dental Society, and Charleston Dental Study Club. Dr. McGehee has also been a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology since 2007. Dr. McGehee was honored to recently be inducted as a Fellow In the International College of Dentists. This is an honorary organization that recognizes leadership, professionalism, integrity, ethics and excellence in the field of dentistry.
Nichole Johnson
Nichole is our office manager. She joined our team in July 2021 as our scheduling coordinator. She lives in Belle with her fiancé Jeremiah and their four children. Most of the time you can catch her in Fayetteville hiking or watching her girls play softball. She enjoys living in West Virginia, but the Gulf Coast will one day be home!
Kaitlin Brown
Kaitlin started working in the office over two years ago as a dental assistant. She loves having the opportunity to meet new patients and see how happy they are after completing treatment. She lives in Dunbar; and in her spare time she loves art, the outdoors, and spending time with her family, friends and two dogs Scout and Kali.
Katie Garten
Katie is a dental hygienist with 10 years experience. She graduated in 2006 from Carver as a dental assistant and in 2010 from Bridgemont CTC with an Associates Degree in Dental Hygiene. She resides in Glasgow, WV with her husband Chris, and their three boys, Gavin, Kasen and Brycen and dog Marco. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with family, DIY projects and traveling. She loves connecting with her patients and helping educate them to achieve their oral health goals.
Gabby Phelix
Gabby Phelix joined our practice in October of 2018. She graduated from BridgeValley CTC in 2015 with her Associate's degree in Dental Hygiene. Gabby currently lives in Nitro with her husband and three dogs. In her spare time she likes to spend time with her family, read, and ride horses.
Amber Woods
Amber graduated from BridgeValley Community and Technical College in 2014 with an Associate Degree in Dental Hygiene. She resides in Cross Lanes with her husband, her daughter, and her two cats. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, and playing outside with her daughter as much as possible. She really enjoys building relationships with patients and making them feel comfortable during their visits.
Cheryl Rucker
Cheryl is a certified dental assistant with expanded duties. She has been in the dental field for 20 years. She is very dependable, honest and easy-going. She loves spending time with her family, especially her husband Ben and son Bryson. The best advice she has been given is that “everything you do has consequences”. She enjoys going to Zumba, collecting sunglasses, and watching football. Her favorite team is the Dallas Cowboys.

"I had an appointment with Dr. McGehee’s Office for a panoramic jaw scan. Living in Parkersburg, traveling to Charleston did not require the time I had estimated, despite the rough I-77 road conditions. My appointment was for 2:00 P.M., I arrived at the office almost an hour early. No problem! The scan was completed, evaluated, and I was scheduled for the proposed implant in early July. At 1:30 P.M., I was on my way back to Parkersburg, yes, on I-77 North. Professionalism is readily apparent in every aspect of Dr. McGehee’s Office. The private parking provides the patient with a safe, easy to reach, back lot location. The Assistants at the Front Desk are prepared and extremely courteous in greeting patients and processing their information. The reception area is comfortable, and provides refreshments (which, ironically the patient cannot enjoy until after the procedure), reading materials, and informative videos of the dental options available for patients. The Office is to be commended for the videos which provide names and credentials of the Staff which further enhances an atmosphere of confidence for the patient. It can be said that Dr. McGehee and his professional staff members are truly patient oriented. Being a reformed dental office coward, I can attest to their reassuring mannerisms. I always look forward to my biannual maintenance appointments. The entire staff has earned the numeric grade of 4.5 on a 4.0 grading scale. Oh yes, my dog “Benny” was rewarded with one of your delicious reception area cookies when I returned to the car.”
